Day 190: It’s a heatwave in our corner of the world. Is it hot where you are? When temperatures hit the high nineties and melt over into the hundreds, boy am I ever grateful for air conditioning.
My mother called days like these SCORCHERS. Our farmhouse did not have AC. Our car did not have AC. She was also in a constant state of “flux” which she blamed on her many medications, and <<whispering politely>> “going through the change.”
Every time we would get in the car in the summer, she would curse the black interior, roll down the windows, and wrap a damp cloth around her neck.
I remember her singing the song “There’s a heatwave, burning in this car. Can’t cool off, no. Even with an early start. And that’s not the way it’s supposed to be! I’ve got a heat wave, burning in my car.”
We may have had the vinyl record of the song, but I don’t remember it. When I was older and heard the actual song, I was surprised that Mom had taken a bit of poetic license with the lyrics. It wasn’t about getting into a hot car, after all.
I have to admit, I sometimes sing her version when I’m getting into a hot car, but then I turn on the AC and silently apologize to my mother. I’m quite certain that there are no heatwaves in heaven. It’s a good thing she behaved herself while she was here. She wouldn’t have done well in the hotter place at all. #MomsCompanyTowels #Heatwave #HotWeek #Scorcher
