Thanksgiving Eve, Somewhere New

43 years ago tonight, on Thanksgiving Eve, David and I went on our first date. We were juniors in high school. It turned out to be our last first date.
13 years of adventures together ensued. Then…..
30 years ago, at age 29, we moved into our starter home.
And we stayed.
Since we were 29 years old, we have celebrated every Thanksgiving Eve first-date anniversary in that starter home of ours.
We had fully settled there.
Put down roots there.
Deep roots.
30 years of roots.
And now, very unexpectedly, here we are, 30 years later at age 59, celebrating Thanksgiving Eve in a new home.
No roots.
No history.
Yet.
But we boxed up those 30 years of memories while we were boxing up all our earthly possessions, and in this new place where we find ourselves, we feel those boxed memories wafting and swirling around us, finding a comfortable corner in which to settle.
It will take some time to make this house our home, and that’s okay. We’ve got 30 years ahead to make it so.
For now, we’ll begin by celebrating our 43rd first-date anniversary.
Happy 43rd first date, David.
And Happy Thanksgiving Eve, to one and all!
