Make today the best hilltop day there ever was. #ImOnTopOfTheWorld #topoftheworld #positivity #halfway #overthehill

All week long, I've been ruminating on what it means to be halfway. Halfway through this year. Halfway to reaching this #MomsCompanyTowels goal. Halfway to freedom. Doing something halfway--or not. Losing the plot halfway through. The "going halfsies" phenomenon. Now, here we are at the end of the discussion, and my mind is still spinning--in full circles--NOT half circles, and this is why. I suggested earlier that because we do not know when our own earthly "halfway" occurs, that we live like it doesn't exist, but that can get us into some trouble, can't it?

When we reach a certain age, we are considered Over the Hill, or Middle-Aged, when really, nobody knows when we've reached the top of our hill or the middle of our age. This hill business is what's got my mind in a vortex.

We all know that going uphill is harder. It takes more time. It takes more exertion. It is hard work getting to the top of a hill. This theory suggests that getting over that hill, and the downhill trek that follows, should be easier, but as my knees can attest, downhill is not easy, either. It's a slippery slope. And WE ALL KNOW that the second half of the journey, even if it is hard, goes faster. The second half of a trip? Faster. The second half of a soda? Faster. The second half never lasts as long as the first half, and I'm thinking its because we aren't working for the top of the hill - our apex - our summit - our middle - our halfway. Instead, we know the END is at the end. Ya know? It's sobering.

That might not make any sense to anyone but me, and that's okay, but just so you know, this is the way I'm thinking about that hill from now on . . .

Up is hard. Down is hard. The sweet spot is the top of the hill. The view from there is the best it will ever be. You're feeling good about accomplishing the uphill, and you haven't yet stepped off into the downhill slope of the unknown.

Therefore, I am suggesting that every day we wake up on earth, we consider it a hilltop day. Downhill can wait. That slippery slope can woosh us to the very end in a matter of minutes. We're not going to spend any time on that downhill side. We're staying on top today, and we're doing our best to make it the best hilltop day there ever was.

Don't ever let anyone call you halfway, or middle-aged, or over the hill in a critical way. Own it, because you are on the hilltop. You are on top of your world today, and that's a pretty great place to be.
